Ngerende in the Wild - River View or Lake View
Ngerende in the WildSince the beginning of August we have been operating Ngerende in the Wild which is a luxury temporary camp but which has all the amenities of a 5 star lodge and is a new addition to our portfolio. A one night stay at Ngerende in the Wild and 2 nights at Ngerende Island Lodge is recommended. For more information please see below. How to mix luxury with the wild with sensitivity in one unforgettable safari – that is Ngerende. Spend one or two nights as a supplement to your main stay at Ngerende Island Lodge for a unique combination of luxury and the bush. Ngerende in the Wild is situated on the banks of the Mara River within the Masai Mara National Park only 15 minutes from one of the key migration crossings. At the riverview site there are two luxury tents with every comfort you would expect but this is a real adventure with the posibility of open air dining, Al fresco bucket showers, great sunsets and all with your private butler. The experience is a must! For the Lake View the suites are more traditional canvas and wood with a lap pool in each of the two large suites. There are amazing views over the savannah and it is not unusual to be able to sit on your terrace watching Elephant, Rhino and Buffalo only a few metres away.
|
Ngerende in the WildThe camp is ideally situated to take full advantage of the numerous wildlife for which the Masai Mara is famed so every game drive is an “event”. Resident around the camp are Buffalos, Black Rhinos, Hippos and Elephant. Combine this with a private chef serving international gourmet foods from the private kitchen, personal butlers, dining under the stars with only the sounds of the night to disturb the peace. It is truly surreal. Ngerende in the Wild is an intriguing combination of the modern with the tradition of canvas but with a special emphasis on comfort. This is truly one experience not to be missed so join us at Ngerende for the best of both worlds- luxury and the bush! There is an additional supplement of US$ 350.00 per person per night on the special package for a stay at Ngerende in the Wild.

Ngerende Fact Sheet
General:
Kenya and the Masai Mara, in particular, are known as the heart beat of the safari, the origins of which date back to the early 1920’s. Ngerende Island Lodge strives to capture the excitement, style and good living of those times but in contemporary style and in keeping with its environment.
Location:
The lodge is set on an oxbow of the Mara River and is surrounded on all sides by the river except for a 100 yards section where the river has not yet cut the ox-bow free to become a true island. The lodge is situated about 120kms from Narok town (a two hour drive or 4 hours from Nairobi) on the Olchoro – Oirogua Conservation Ranch which borders the Masai Mara Game Reserve. The Olchoro – Oirogua Ranch which is now managed by Mara Conservancy covers more than 5000 acres and is mainly open savannah except along the banks of the Mara River which are heavily wooded and are ideal habitat for wildlife. The lodge lies at 5300 feet above sea level and is serviced by its own airstrip at a distance of 2kms with scheduled flights from Malindi, Mombasa, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi and Wilson Airport, Nairobi. The flight time from Nairobi is about 1 hour.
Accommodation:
There are 7 luxury en-suite canvas and wood suites all with raised platforms giving panoramic views of the Mara River and the woods on the opposite bank. Each tent has polished Mahogany floors (including the terrace) and is very spacious providing open plan sleeping and living area complete with wood fire, a separate bathroom providing both a massage shower, open air bath (if desired) hand wash basins and flushing toilet. Comfortable seating is provided both in the living area and on the terrace so that the true tranquility of the lodge can be best appreciated. The distance between each suite has been maximized to reduce any risk of disturbance that may be caused by other guests.
Description:
Ngerende Island Lodge has been designed to complement the safari experience so as to give comfort, luxury and service naturally. There is an abundance of wildlife both on the Conservation Ranch and of course within the Masai Mara Game Reserve to include Lion, Elephant, Rhino, Buffalo, Hippo’s and many others. A feature of the Conservation Ranch is an exclusive project to rear the White Rhino so that they can take their place back in the Mara society to which they belong in greater numbers. Over 180 varieties of birds have been spotted within the lodge itself and there are 3 Hippo Pools strategically located around the lodge.
The lodge can sleep up to 14 guests in individually designed suites. There is one honeymoon suite isolated from the main lodge which has stunning views of the river. The public room is also on a raised platform of gum poles with a large open terrace overlooking a Hippo Pool which normally has about 20 residents. There is a library, sitting room all with log fires, a small bar area and dinning area. There is also a craft shop stocked mainly with locally produced items created by Masai women who rely on the lodge for theirs and their families living. The lodge is pleased to provide them with an outlet for their fine goods.
Opposite Suite No.2 and at the Northern edge of the lodge are two further Hippo Pools the latter rumored to be the largest group on the Northern side of Masai Mara.
We have completed the construction of a spa built overlooking the pool and the “rapids” which is offering aromatherapy and massage treatments. There is also an infinity swimming pool with two Bandas where we host conferences, board meetings and team building activities.
Finally the lodge is traffic free and has been designed so that guests enjoy the peace and quiet except of course for the birds and the Hippos. All suites have a personal butler.
Activities:
- Game drives in 4x4 wheel drive vehicles
- Guided Bush Walks
- Bush Breakfasts
- Sundowners
- Massage and Aromatherapy
- Night game drives (extra)
- Gym (Phase 3)
Wedding and Honeymoon:
The lodge is ideally suited for the hosting of weddings and the honeymoon suite a perfect getaway retreat.
Drinks and cuisine:
Soft drinks, house wine, bottled water, local beers and selected spirits are included in the room rates. Champagne, non house wine and luxury spirits/liquors are an additional extra. Cuisine is international from our very own talented chef who uses whenever possible organic vegetables grown at the lodge. The chef will easily adapt the menu to suit individual tastes and requirements if previously advised.
The long rains are usually from Mid April until Mid June while the short rains fall during November. The rains generally however occur at night so day activities are not normally affected. The hottest months are January, February and October and the coldest July and August when evening temperature can drop to 15 C
Recommended Clothing
The camp is informal but shorts/sleeveless T shirts are not permitted in the dinning area where smart casual attire is requested. For your comfort we suggest you pack hat, sunscreen, binoculars, sandals, walking shoes and for the cool evenings and early mornings some warm clothing will be required. We suggest you also bring a light waterproof jacket.
Malaria
The risk of malaria is not high but please take all necessary precautions including contacting your doctor before traveling.
Conservation Fee
The group ranch, Olchoro – Oirogua receives a conservation fee for every guest who stays at the lodge which for now is US$ 70.00 per person per night but will change to US$ 80.00 in July according to County Council of Narok gazetted rates
